One of three rescued elephants during Covid, beautiful Butterfly, as we affectionately named her, was rescued to Tree Tops on 13th April 2021. Originally from Surin Province in North East Thailand, 50 year old Butterfly has spent years being sold from one owner to another, as a logging elephant, and then re-trained to give rides to tourists. Butterfly is safe with us now and is showered with unconditional love and kindness. Our peaceful sanctuary will allow her mind and body to continue to heal and we hope she will slowly leave her past behind.

Asia is one of three elephants that we rescued during Covid. She is a huge elephant and we felt her new name was very apt for the impressive elephant that she is. Asia is 38 years old and was giving rides to tourists most of her life. She’s very calm and actually seems a lot younger than she is. She has the most adorable squeak when vocalizing and loves spending her time bathing and playing with Fah Sai. The two have an inseparable bond. These two, along with Nam Gaew and Nam Sook have been inseparable every since forming a wonderful family of four.

One of three rescued elephants during Covid, gorgeous little Malee was brought to Tree Tops on 29th April 2021. Malee is around 50 years old, and like most elephants, she spent years being sold from one owner to another. She is very sweet and quite a small elephant and she really seems to prefer her own company. Malee absolutely LOVES banana trees! She loves eating the thick juicy trunks which are superb for rehydration, and also the lush green banana leaves. She has actually pushed over quite a few of our banana trees though thankfully we have a lot!

Nam Gaew is such a gentle, kind soul. When we transitioned Tree Tops, she instantly became very protective of our youngest elephant Fah Sai, instantly forming a beautiful inseparable bond as her adoptive mother. She always stands close to Fah Sai when grazing, bathing or playing. It is a beautiful relationship of two elephants that are enjoying the peace that Tree Tops brings. Nam Gaew loves to bathe in the pond at the back of Tree Tops. She often leans against the muddy bank and closes her eyes, able to completely relax now her dreams have finally come true.
Fah Sai was born in February 2010 in Chumporn province in the central part of Thailand. She is our youngest elephant, and is very playful and mischievous, and we all adore her. As with all young elephants, Fah Sai is full of energy and loves to bathe, play, and slide around in the mud, often for an hour or more! She is also very vocal, and we can often hear her gorgeous high pitch trumpets throughout Tree Tops. Nam Gaew is Fah Sai’s main protector. A wise gentle soul whom at 50 years old, guides, teaches, nurtures and protects Fah Sai as her adoptive mother.
Tong Tip had a long history of working in the logging and tourism industry. While she is very sweet, calm, and kind, she has trouble making friends with the other elephants, often choosing to push them as if she’s not quite sure how to make friends. Tong Tip loves bathing in the ponds and wallowing in the mud but it took time for her to gain confidence to do these things. We will never truly know the full details of her past, but all we can do is give her as much time and freedom to calm her mind and enjoy her life, and re-learn all the natural behaviours that elephants love to do.
Lam Poon was brought to Phuket from Phang Nga province after the logging company closed down. She has peachy-pink de-pigmentation on her face, trunk, and along the edge of her ears, making her not only very beautiful but also very easy to recognize. Lam Poon doesn’t like crowds of people. She can become stressed and aggresstive if there is too much noise. She is, however, a favorite of everyone as she is very friendly elephant. Lam Poon loves the company of other elephants particularly Nam Gaew and Tong Tip but, we usually find she walks off to be on her own.
Nam Sook isknown as ‘Grandma’ at Tree Tops. She is originally from Phatthalung Province in Southern Thailand and she is our oldest elephant at Tree Tops. She spent her former years hauling timber at a logging camp before she was sold to Phuket where she was used to give rides to tourists. Some days, Nam Sook sets off walking around Tree Tops and we are astounded as to how much ground she can cover! Even though her body is tired, there is a strong minded, wise senior lady living the best life she can. She loves to put mud on herself or walk through the shallow stream.
Boon Song spent most of her life as a logging elephant before she was sold into tourism in Phuket. We can only tell her story as we know it, and we are just so thankful that she is at Tree Tops and her life has now changed. She loves to graze quietly by the river, and particularly likes to eat harder foods such as twigs and branches. She also loves to wade into the pond in front of our restaurant to cool down and for refreshing drink from our fresh water troughs positioned in the rocks. She now has all the time in the world to let her mind calm and her body relax into this new world she’s a part of.
